Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst,
ramping up his criticism of the federal administration to a new level,
called Monday night for President Obama to be impeached.
In an appearance at a Tarrant County Tea Party candidate forum, Dewhurst said Obama should be impeached for his overreaching positions on immigration and health care and for his lapses in the 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
Dewhurst, a former CIA officer, has previously criticized the Obama administration over the consulate attack.
Republican Dewhurst is facing three GOP challengers in his bid for re-election, and all the candidates have blasted the Democratic administration in recent months on a variety of issues as each tries to draw support from the conservative wing of the party.
Monday’s statements by Dewhurst were the first time that any had suggested Congress should consider impeaching Obama.
Dewhurst’s statements were first reported on Twitter by a reporter for the Texas Observer who was attending the event. They were later confirmed by a Dewhurst campaign spokesman.
